Why does writing look backwards in a mirror?
Hold the card up to the mirror. Which way did you turn it?
The card faces you. The mirror only sees its blank back.
Turn the card
Show the mirror your card.
To let the mirror see the word, you have to turn the card around. There are two ways to do it. Press Turn it like a page, then press Flip it over the top, and watch the word in the mirror each time.
You’re looking from a little above and to the right, so the reflection shows up beside the card instead of hiding behind it.
The mirror didn’t do it.
Picture FLIP painted on a window so it reads the right way from inside. Now walk outside in your head and look at the same glass. The word reads backwards, and there’s no mirror anywhere. If you’ve ever sat in a café and looked out at the name painted on its window, you’ve seen this.
A mirror works just like that outside view. It shows you the side of the card that faces it, as if you were standing behind the card and looking through it. The backwards part came from you. You turned the card like a page to face the mirror.
The same painted word, seen from both sides of the glass.
Some ambulances spell their name backwards on purpose.
On the front of many ambulances, AMBULANCE is printed in mirror writing. When the driver ahead sees the ambulance in their rearview mirror, the word reads the right way around.
Your reflection works the same way.
Raise your right hand in front of a mirror. The reflection raises the hand straight across from yours, on the same side. It only looks like its left hand because you picture walking around to stand where it is. That imaginary turn is what swapped left and right. The mirror only swapped front and back.
Put a name to the backwards word
Mirror image
A copy that’s reversed in one direction only, like the backwards word in the mirror. A left glove is a mirror image of a right one. Turn it any way you like and it still won’t fit a right hand.
“That backwards word is a mirror image of FLIP.”Mirror writing
Writing done backwards on purpose, so it reads the right way in a mirror. Leonardo da Vinci wrote most of his notes like this.
“The word on the front of that ambulance is in mirror writing.”
